Bio

I’m a Research Assistant Professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, in the Institute for Innovations in Medical Education and the Center for Empathy in Medicine. My training is in cognitive neuroscience. My latest work is on whether AI-generated feedback produces genuine learning or the appearance of it.

I’m Principal Investigator on Communication Compass: AI-Enhanced Feedback System (Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation), one of three projects selected nationally in AI in Medical Education. The trial pairs speech recognition with large language models to assess how residents educate and counsel patients, returns structured feedback drawn from their own encounters, and measures calibration accuracy and learner agency. The system was co-designed with residents and faculty. Co-Principal Investigator: Jesse Burk-Rafel, MD, MRes.

I’m Principal Investigator on the Empathy Project Stories Research at NYU Langone, a twelve-month follow-up asking whether participants can still name, unprompted, the practices they picked up for exercising empathy.

Prior to this, I directed the educational intervention design and implementation for an NIH-funded randomized clinical trial examining brain plasticity in children learning new skills.

I co-founded the POD Network’s AI in Education Special Interest Group (founded in 2023, 3,000+ members) and moderated the research session at the Teaching & Learning with Generative AI Virtual Symposium. I also facilitate a grassroots peer community for decision science practitioners. My conference work arc traces early questions of AI literacy and adoption (2023) to the harder problems of redesign and learner agency (2025; 2026).

I write on Substack about metacognition, decision making, and the future of human learning.
